Motocross chain maintenance comes down to three things: keeping the chain clean, keeping it lubricated, and keeping the slack correct. Get those right and a chain and sprocket set lasts a season of hard riding. Get them wrong — particularly the slack — and you will chew through sprockets, wreck the chain slider, and make the rear suspension work worse than it should.
Here is what the chain manufacturers specify, what the tightest-point rule means on a long-travel bike, and how to tell when a set is finished.
Why chain slack matters more on a dirt bike #
A motocross bike needs more chain slack than a road bike, and the reason is geometry. The rear wheel travels through a long arc, and the distance between the countershaft sprocket and the rear axle changes as the suspension moves. Dirt Rider puts the key point plainly: the chain is at its tightest when the centres of the countershaft sprocket, the swingarm pivot and the rear axle line up in a straight line, because that is where the rear wheel sits farthest from the front sprocket.
This is why you cannot judge slack with the bike on a stand and the suspension hanging. Motocross Action Magazine describes the target as just a bit of tension at that tightest point. Their rule of thumb is roughly three fingers between the rear of the chain buffer pad and the chain, while noting that the recommended figure differs between brands — so your manual wins over any rule of thumb.
The consequences run both ways. Too tight, and the rear suspension action turns harsh, because the chain is fighting the swingarm through its travel. Too loose, and the rear end feels sloppy while the chain slaps its way through the slider and guide. MXA is blunt about the cost: a chain run with excess slack makes more noise, creates more drag, and damages the chain, the sprockets, the chain slider and the chain guide.
Check alignment, not just tension #
Axle blocks and the cast marks on the swingarm are a starting point, not gospel. MXA recommends double-checking those marks by measuring to the swingarm pivot on both sides and sighting down the chain to confirm the chain and sprocket run straight. The tell that you got it wrong shows up on the sprocket: wear on the inner or outer edges of the teeth means the sprockets are not aligned.
Cleaning: less aggressive than most riders think #
Every part of a sealed chain that matters is protected by rubber. The O-rings sit between the inner and outer side plates and hold the factory grease around the rivets, and that grease is there for the life of the chain. Anything that gets past those seals — solvent, water at pressure, grit — starts the clock on chain failure.
The chain makers are specific about method. D.I.D says to wipe the chain with a soft cloth dampened with an O-ring or X-ring safe cleaner and dry it completely every 300 miles (500 km), and warns against steam, thinners, and volatile solvents such as petrol or benzene, as well as against a wire brush. RK’s list of what not to use is longer: no kerosene, mineral spirits, diesel, brake cleaner, motor oil, or caustic chemicals, and no wire or hard-bristle brush. RK’s recommended approach is a rag doused in a mineral-based O-ring safe cleaner, wiping the dirt off.
One caveat worth flagging, because the sources genuinely disagree. Both chain manufacturers rule out kerosene outright. Bennetts BikeSocial, testing 55 chain lubes, deliberately used paraffin — kerosene in US terms — as a neutral cleaning baseline, and built a rig to check whether it crept past a compressed O-ring; in that test, none got through. To stay inside what the chain manufacturer sanctions, use a purpose-made O-ring safe cleaner.
The one thing everyone agrees on is the pressure washer. Bennetts is explicit: do not use a jet wash to blast away grime, because it will push past the seals and drive the factory grease out of the rivets. On a muddy bike this is exactly the temptation to resist — rinse the chain, do not pressure-blast it.
Mud does something you may not expect #
Mud does not only wear the chain. MXA notes that it packs into the bottom of the sprocket teeth, and when the chain can no longer seat properly down there, the chain effectively gets tighter. You end up running a too-tight chain without having touched the adjusters, with all the extra pressure on chain and sprockets that implies. After a wet race, clear the teeth as well as the chain.
Lubrication: on a clean chain, well before you ride #
D.I.D’s interval is to lubricate every other use with an O-ring or X-ring safe lubricant, applying a light coat to the inner links while rotating the rear wheel — a little goes a long way. For motocross specifically, D.I.D advises making chain cleaning a priority after every ride, especially after dusty or muddy tracks.
Two practical details from the Bennetts testing are worth adopting. First, apply lube to a clean chain; on a dirty chain it will not adhere as well and you will get more fling. Second, do it well before riding — ideally the night before — so the solvents evaporate and the product sets rather than spraying off on the first lap. The often-repeated advice about lubing a warm chain matters less than the chain being clean.
Bennetts also found a real trade-off in how sticky a lube stays. A lube that flings off badly makes a mess and loses its corrosion protection, but a lube that stays very sticky attracts dirt and grit, and that mixture becomes a grinding paste that damages the O-rings and accelerates roller wear. For dusty conditions a less sticky product has an argument, at the cost of reapplying more often. Their lab work used an IP 239 four-ball wear test, where a mean wear scar around 0.4 mm is good and 1 mm or more suggests a lubricant is underperforming.
When to replace the chain and sprockets #
Chains fail by stretching. D.I.D’s stated limits are 1% elongation for sealed chains and 2% for non-sealed, and they give a usable check: on a 120-link chain, five pitches measured against spec means about 0.75 in of total stretch on a sealed chain and 1.5 in on a non-sealed one. Rust, stiffness, or missing X-rings are also grounds for replacement, and a stiff chain is not just a chain problem — MXA points out that forcing a rigid chain around a sprocket wears it fast and can break teeth, especially on aluminium sprockets.
For sprockets, the visual test is the tooth profile. MXA’s description is the one to memorise: if the teeth are getting cupped out, snaggle-toothed or uneven, the chain is probably past its prime too.
RK quotes replacement intervals of roughly every 20,000 miles for sealed chains and every 3,000 miles for non-sealed ones — road-biased mileage figures, but the ratio tells you how much the seals are doing. Both D.I.D and RK are unambiguous on the same point: replace the chain and both sprockets together. A new chain on worn sprockets, or the reverse, damages the new part.
One extra from MXA that is easy to forget: the rear sprocket bolts sit in a high-stress area and want checking closely after a sprocket change, with new bolts every other rear sprocket replacement.
A workable routine #
- After every ride: rinse — do not jet-wash — then wipe the chain with an O-ring safe cleaner and clear packed mud from the sprocket teeth.
- Every other ride: lubricate a clean chain with an O-ring safe lube, the evening before the next session.
- Before every session: check slack at the tightest point, with the countershaft sprocket, swingarm pivot and rear axle in line.
- Periodically: measure stretch against the 1% or 2% limit, and look at the tooth profile for cupping.
