Frequently asked questions about Motocross clothing
Why is motocross clothing cut so differently from regular sportswear?
Because the riding position is unique. Jersey sleeves are long and pre-curved to sit at the wrist in the standing attack position. Pants have stretch panels over the hamstrings and leather inner-knee panels for grip on the seat. Gloves are pre-curved with single-layer palms for grip feedback. Wearing a regular shirt and shorts on a bike fights you every minute of the ride.
Should I size up or down for motocross gear?
Order true to size, but always check the brand's chart — sizing varies wildly across MX brands. Pants are usually called out by waist in inches; jerseys by chest measurement. Remember that jerseys are designed to go over body armour, so they run roomier in the chest than street tops.
How do I wash motocross gear without ruining the graphics?
Cold water, mild detergent, wash inside-out, do not tumble dry. The sublimated graphics on modern MX jerseys are heat-sensitive and will lift or crack if you put them in a hot dryer. Hang to dry. For mud-caked pants, hose them off first before they go in the wash so the dirt does not just spread.
Can I wear motocross gear for trail riding or dual-sport?
Yes, and many trail riders do — MX gear is light, ventilated and protects against branches and roost. The trade-off is that pure MX cuts can feel athletic for slow technical riding; enduro-cut pants and jerseys (slightly more relaxed, often with pockets) split the difference if you spend most of your time off-track.
Do I need a matching jersey and pants set?
Not at all — many riders mix brands by preference. Sets do offer a cleaner look on the bike, a discounted bundle price, and matched cuts so the jersey hem and pant waist layer cleanly without bunching. If you find a colour and brand you love, sets are usually the best value.
