Electric motocross bikes are no longer a concept drawing. You can buy one with 80 horsepower, no clutch and no gearbox, and it will beat most combustion bikes off a corner. What the sport has not settled is where they are allowed to race — and in 2026 the two biggest governing platforms gave opposite answers to that question.

What an electric motocross bike actually is now #

Take the Stark Varg EX as the reference point, since it is the machine most of the argument is about. Stark Future’s own figures for it: a 7.2 kWh battery pack, 60 or 80 hp depending on version, 764 lb-ft of torque measured at the rear wheel, and a claimed weight of 264 lb. Power curves are customisable between 10 and 80 hp. There are no gears and no clutch.

That adjustable range is the part people skip past. The same bike can be a 10 hp trainer for a nervous beginner or an 80 hp weapon, changed in software rather than with a pipe and a piston. Nothing with a carburettor does that.

Charging, per Stark, takes about two hours on 240 V or three and a half hours on 120 V.

What it is like to ride #

Cycle News, who tested it, put the appeal plainly: without worrying about the clutch, shifting or stalling, the bike lets you focus on other aspects of riding. One of their test riders called not having to hunt for the sweet spot in the power, or worry about stalling, a game changer. The flip side they flag is that throttle control has to be good, because there is no clutch to cover your mistakes.

On weight, their figure is 272 lb against 253 lb for a KTM 450 EXC — heavier than the manufacturer’s own claim, and heavier than the combustion bike it competes with. Their verdict was that you do not feel it on the trail unless you are wrestling the bike around in tight spots, helped by how narrow it is.

The range question, answered honestly #

This is where marketing and reality diverge, and Cycle News published numbers rather than adjectives. Their observed ranges by riding style:

For a motocross rider doing two twenty-minute motos, that is a non-issue. For anyone riding long enduro loops it is the whole issue. Cycle News were direct about it: the bike is not suited to 50-plus-mile rides or anything with significant open, high-speed riding.

Charging in the real world took them at least two hours at 220 V and four hours at 110 V, and they noted the 40 lb charging stand is impractical to transport. A tank of petrol still goes in a jerry can in the back of the van.

MXGP’s answer: a class of its own #

MXGP announced MXEP, an all-electric support class to the FIM Motocross World Championship, debuting in 2026 across six rounds in Europe and running prototype electric bikes alongside existing MXGP events.

The framing on MXGP’s own announcement is notably cautious. It describes the class as a way to create a path for the technology to develop, explicitly says the organisers wanted to avoid mixing electric machines with regular ones, and states outright that the rules were not yet defined — Infront Moto Racing, the FIM and the MSMA were still to work out the regulations and infrastructure together.

Motocross Action reports the reasoning behind the segregation, and it is a history lesson rather than a technical argument: the FIM does not want to upset the existing race system by letting electric bikes race the current platforms without a couple of years to develop rules and technical specifications, having watched what happened when four-strokes rushed in, pushed two-strokes out of the sport, and raised costs for manufacturers and consumers alike.

Not everyone was pleased. Per the same report, Stark Future condemned the MXEP concept of a separate class for electric bikes, while Motocross Action’s own editorial view is that a stand-alone class is the safer route, because it lets the awkward questions — battery life, charging, horsepower equivalency and fan interest — actually be measured rather than argued about.

Supercross went the other way #

Here is the interesting contradiction. The FIM has confirmed that electric bikes may compete in the SX1 and SX2 classes of the FIM World Supercross Championship — against combustion bikes, not separated from them.

They do it through Equivalence of Technologies / Balance of Performance rules, described by the FIM as technical regulations designed to ensure fair and safe competition between electric and internal combustion motorcycles. In practice that includes approved ballast where needed to meet the weight limit, and compulsory working LED side lights, the latter applying only at FIM World Supercross events. The decision came jointly from the FIM International Technical Commission and the FIM Motocross Commission.

So within the same governing body, supercross says race them together with a handicap, and the motocross world championship says keep them apart until we understand them. Both positions are defensible. They cannot both be the long-term answer.

Why this matters even if you will never buy one #

The four-stroke comparison that Motocross Action raises is the one worth sitting with. That transition was not decided by which engine was better. It was decided by rules, by what manufacturers chose to build, and by what ended up on showroom floors — and riders who preferred two-strokes largely lost the argument without ever being asked. Whatever rules get written for MXEP over the next few seasons will shape what manufacturers invest in, and that eventually shapes what you can buy. This is the stage where it gets decided.

Where that leaves a rider today #

An electric motocross bike in 2026 is a genuinely capable machine with a specific shape of compromise: outstanding power delivery and no drivetrain to manage, at the cost of range, charging logistics and a bit of weight. For track sessions and shorter trail rides it works. For long days in the hills it does not, and the people who tested it say so plainly.
